Dimensional Letters for Signs: Manufacturing Technologies and Cost

Dimensional Letters for Signs: Manufacturing Technologies and Cost

3D letters are one of the most recognisable and in-demand outdoor advertising formats. Every day we see them on the facades of shopping centers, banks, restaurants, hotels and office buildings. In Tashkent the demand for 3D letters is growing steadily: businesses increasingly choose this format for its presentable look, durability and visibility after dark.

But behind the simple appearance lies a serious production process. The body material, the type of lighting, the fixing method and the wall thickness all affect the end result and the cost. In this article we look at the technologies for making 3D letters, compare materials and give real price guidelines for Uzbekistan.

What 3D letters are and why they are effective

3D letters are three-dimensional advertising elements, each with a front panel, side walls (returns) and a back. Unlike flat signs with printed text, 3D letters are perceived as separate physical objects, which creates a sense of solidity and quality.

The main advantages of 3D letters over other formats: they are visible from a long distance, work well in side lighting thanks to the shadows, look expensive even without illumination and last much longer than banners or stickers. Illuminated 3D letters keep working at night, attracting the attention of people on foot and in cars.

Types of 3D letters by lighting type

The type of lighting is the main factor determining the appearance, cost and power consumption of 3D letters. Four main types are used in modern production.

Letters with internal (front) lighting

The classic and most widespread option. LED modules are placed inside the letter body, and the light passes through a translucent acrylic front panel. The result is a bright, even glow of the front surface. Such letters read well from 50-200 meters and suit most commercial sites: shops, pharmacies, mobile phone stores and banks.

Letters with halo (back) lighting

Halo lighting is light directed from the letter towards the wall. The letter itself does not glow but creates a soft halo of light on the facade. It looks restrained, stylish and premium. This format is more often chosen by restaurants, hotels, boutiques, premium brands, architecture studios and medical clinics. For halo lighting a metal or dark body with an open back and an LED strip along the inner perimeter is used.

Letters with combined lighting

A combination of front and halo lighting in one letter. The front panel glows and at the same time a halo of light forms behind the letter. This is the most expressive and eye-catching option, but also the most expensive. It is used on large sites: facades of shopping centers, car dealerships and business centers.

Non-illuminated 3D letters

Letters without lighting are a budget option when the sign only needs to work in daylight. They are made of acrylic, PVC, composite or metal. They are often used in office buildings, on facades with existing architectural lighting, or as additional elements to a main illuminated sign.

Materials for making 3D letters

The choice of material determines the appearance, weight, durability and price of the letters. Several main materials are used in advertising production in Tashkent.

Acrylic (plexiglass)

The most popular material for the front panels of illuminated letters. Acrylic transmits light evenly, is easy to machine on milling and laser equipment and comes in dozens of colors. The front panel is usually 3-5 mm thick. Acrylic is resistant to UV radiation and temperature swings, which matters in Uzbekistan's climate with its hot summers.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel letters are the choice of the premium segment. They are heavier and more expensive, but look maximally presentable: mirror polish, matte brushed finish or a bronze/gold coating. Stainless steel does not rust, does not fade and lasts for decades. It is used for banks, jewellery shops, hotels and business centers.

Aluminum and galvanised steel

Aluminum is used for the returns and back covers of letters: it is lighter than stainless steel, cheaper and takes powder coating well. Galvanised steel is used in frame structures and for budget projects where the letters are painted in the brand color.

PVC (polyvinyl chloride)

A light, affordable material for non-illuminated letters and interior signs. PVC 10-20 mm thick can be milled, painted and glued easily. It is not suitable for large outdoor letters: over time it deforms in the heat. But for interiors, exhibitions and temporary structures it is the best choice for price and quality.

Production technology: stages of manufacture

Making 3D letters goes through several mandatory stages. Each of them affects the final quality of the structure.

  • Artwork development. A designer creates a vector layout with the exact dimensions of every letter, and determines the font, height, return depth and type of lighting. The layout is agreed with the customer and adapted to the conditions of the facade.
  • Cutting the materials. Front panels are cut on a laser or CNC milling machine. Returns are bent on sheet-bending equipment (for metal) or formed by heat (for acrylic and PVC).
  • Assembling the body. The returns are fixed to the front panel with glue, welding or bolts, depending on the material. A three-dimensional box is formed for each letter.
  • Installing the lighting. LED modules or LED strip are installed inside the letter and the power supply is connected. A glow uniformity test is carried out, and if there are "dark zones", the placement of the modules is adjusted.
  • Painting and finishing. The body is painted the required color (powder coating for metal, Oracal film for acrylic and PVC). The quality of the joints and surfaces is checked.
  • Installation on site. The letters are fixed to the facade with studs (spacer mounts) or a mounting frame. The electrics are connected and a final lighting check is carried out.

The cost of 3D letters in Tashkent

The price of 3D letters is calculated individually, but the main price guidelines for the Uzbek market can be identified. The cost depends on the size of the letters, the material, the type of lighting and the quantity.

Type of 3D lettersPrice per letter (from)Lead time
Acrylic with front LED lighting (h 30-40 cm)from 800,000 UZS7-10 days
Acrylic with halo lighting (h 30-40 cm)from 1,000,000 UZS10-14 days
Stainless steel with lighting (h 30-50 cm)from 1,500,000 UZS14-21 days
Combined lighting (h 40-60 cm)from 1,800,000 UZS14-21 days
Non-illuminated PVC (h 20-30 cm)from 200,000 UZS3-5 days
Non-illuminated acrylic (h 20-40 cm)from 350,000 UZS5-7 days

* Prices are given for a letter height of 30-40 cm. As the size increases, the cost rises proportionally.

The price is also affected by the complexity of the font (thin serifs are more expensive to machine), the number of letters (serial production is cheaper), the method of fixing to the facade and the presence of extra elements: a logo, frame or decorative backing.

How to save on 3D letters without losing quality Choose sans-serif fonts (grotesque): they are easier to make. Combine illuminated letters with non-illuminated elements of the sign. Order the sign "turnkey" from one contractor, which rules out subcontractor mark-ups.

How to choose 3D letters: what to pay attention to

When ordering 3D letters, consider several practical points that affect the end result.

  • Letter height and reading distance. For a pedestrian zone, letters 20-30 cm high are enough. For a facade visible from the road, 40 cm and up. For monument signs and rooftop structures, 60 cm and above.
  • Color and contrast. Letters must contrast with the facade. Light letters on a dark background are a universal solution. Dark letters with halo lighting suit light facades.
  • Power consumption. LED modules use 3-8 W per letter depending on size. For a sign of 10 letters that is 30-80 W, less than a single incandescent bulb. A power supply with a 20% power reserve will extend the service life.
  • Maintenance. Quality LED modules last 50,000 hours (5-7 years of continuous operation). Replacing one module costs from 50,000 UZS, which is cheaper than replacing the whole structure.

Frequently asked questions

Which 3D letters are best for a shop?

For most shops, acrylic letters with front LED lighting are the best choice. They are bright, noticeable, relatively affordable and last 8-10 years. A height of 30-40 cm suits a ground-floor facade on a pedestrian street.

Can 3D letters be installed on a rented building?

Yes, 3D letters are fixed to the facade on studs and are removed without serious damage. When you change location, the sign can be moved to the new site if the dimensions and conditions allow. The landlord must be notified of the installation.

How long does it take to make a sign from 3D letters?

The standard lead time is 7-14 working days from approval of the layout to installation. For complex structures in stainless steel or with combined lighting, up to 3 weeks. Rush orders are possible at a surcharge.

Does Uzbekistan's climate affect 3D letters?

With the right choice of materials, no. Acrylic withstands UV and temperatures up to +80 °C. Stainless steel does not corrode. LED modules are rated for a range from -30 to +50 °C. The main thing is the quality of sealing at the joints, so that moisture does not get inside the body.

Is approval needed for a sign made of 3D letters?

Yes, as with any outdoor advertising, in most cases approval from the district khokimiyat (city administration) and the building owner is required. Advertising and production agencies in Tashkent take the procedure on themselves.
