Mobiles and hanging POS structures: ceiling hangers, jumbo hangers and wobblers for stores

Hanging cardboard mobile and a 3D jumbo figure under the ceiling of a supermarket sales floor

Hanging advertising works in the "dead" zone of the sales hall, at a height of 2.2-2.5 meters, which no rack reaches and where the shopper looks when orienting in the space. A mobile, a jumbo or a ceiling poster is visible from the entrance, takes up no useful shelf area and duplicates navigation to the right category. Below: what hanging POS structures exist, what they are made of and how to attach them so that they hold for months and do not tear loose from the air conditioner.

What a Mobile Is and What Hanging POS Materials Are

A mobile is a lightweight advertising structure that is hung from the ceiling on fishing line or thread. The term came from kinetic hangings: the elements turn with the movement of air and attract attention. In retail, hanging POS materials include mobiles, jumbos (three-dimensional figures and enlarged copies of packaging), ceiling posters, garlands and hanging modules above a category.

Their job is to work at the upper level of the sales floor: mark the promo zone, show the brand from afar and steer the flow of shoppers towards the shelf. Unlike wobblers and shelf talkers, which work right next to the product, hanging structures catch attention from 10-20 meters away.

Types of hanging structures

Structure Material Typical size Your task
Flat mobile Cardboard 250-350 g/m², PET 0.3 mm A4-A2 Promo campaign, new product above a category
Jumbo (3D figure) Corrugated board, foam board 5-10 mm 0.5-1.5 m Oversized pack, life-size brand figure
Ceiling poster Heavy paper, PVC 0.3-0.5 mm A1-A0 Zoning, in-store navigation
Garland / pennants Coated paper, cardboard Strip 3-5 m Checkout decoration, seasonal promo

Flat mobiles are printed on both sides so that they read as they turn. Jumbos are assembled from foam board or corrugated board with glued locking tabs: a large figure weighs little and hangs on a single fishing line. A ceiling poster is often double-sided and made rigid on PVC so that it does not curl in the heat under the ceiling.

Materials and printing

Choosing a material is a balance between weight and rigidity. The higher the hanging point, the lighter the structure must be, otherwise the fixing will not cope with the leverage of a long drop.

  • Cardboard 250-350 g/m² is the base for flat mobiles: cheap and light, and offset printing gives accurate color. Its downside is that it cannot stand moisture.
  • Foam board 3-10 mm is for jumbos and three-dimensional figures: rigid at a low weight, it holds its shape.
  • PVC 0.3-0.5 mm is meant for long-term hangings: moisture and heat do not harm it, and it lasts for months.
  • PET film is for transparent and glossy elements and the effect of "floating" graphics.

Printing: offset for runs of 500 pieces or more (lower price per impression) and UV printing for small batches and rigid materials. For acrylic and plastic, only UV printing or wide-format printing with UV inks will do: they lie on a non-porous surface and do not rub off.

Fixings: how to hang it so that it stays up

Half of all complaints about hanging structures come down to a fallen structure. The fixing method is chosen to suit the ceiling type:

Ceiling type Fixing Features
Armstrong (suspended) Clip-hook on the profile Quick, no drilling, up to 0.5 kg
Concrete / plasterboard Screw-in hook, wall plug For heavy jumbos, installed in advance
Metal structures Magnet, "crab" clamp Can be repositioned without leaving marks
Shop window / glass Suction cup with hook Temporary promo, light elements

A standard fishing line withstands 3-5 kg, but for a hanging piece what matters is not breaking but swaying from the air conditioner and draughts. That is why heavy jumbos are fixed at two points, and light mobiles at one point with a swivel, so that the structure rotates instead of twisting the line. The hanging height in a sales floor is 2.2-2.5 m from the floor: any lower and people hit it with their heads, any higher and legibility is lost.

How to choose a hanging structure for the task

For a short promotion (2-4 weeks), choose a flat cardboard mobile: cheap and quick to produce. For a brand or new product launch a jumbo works well: a three-dimensional copy of the pack, 3-5 times larger than the real one, catches the eye from afar. For permanent navigation around the sales floor, use a rigid PVC poster: it does not yellow and holds its shape under the heat of the lamps. Seasonal decoration of the checkout area is covered with garlands and pennants.

Hanging structures reinforce floor and shelf advertising, they do not replace it. Combined with promo stands and floor displays they build a route: the hanging piece attracts from the entrance, the stand holds the shopper at the product. Print runs and lead times in Tashkent

Flat mobiles are printed in runs from 100 pieces, with a production time from 1-2 working days. Jumbos and three-dimensional figures take longer to build: from 3-5 days for cutting, assembly and gluing. On a run of 500 pieces or more, offset printing cuts the unit price by 1.5-2 times compared with digital. For a chain of stores, the structures are supplied with fixings and an installation guide so that a merchandiser can assemble them on site without tools.

Frequently asked questions about hanging POS structures

What is a jumbo?

A jumbo is a three-dimensional advertising figure, most often a copy of the product pack enlarged 3-5 times or a life-size figure of a brand character. It is made of foam board or corrugated board and hung up or placed on the floor in the promo zone.

At what height should a mobile be hung?

Ideally 2.2-2.5 meters from the floor. Any lower and shoppers bump into the structure with their heads; any higher and the text and graphics lose legibility from eye level.

Will a hanging piece fall because of the air conditioner?

Light mobiles are hung at one point with a swivel so that they rotate rather than twist the line. Heavy jumbos are hung at two points. The line withstands 3-5 kg, which is more than enough.

What is the cheapest material for a mobile?

The most budget-friendly option is cardboard 250-350 g/m² with offset printing on a run of 500 pieces or more. For humid rooms and a long service life, PVC 0.3-0.5 mm is used: it costs more, but it does not fear moisture or heat.

Can advertising be hung from an Armstrong ceiling without drilling?

Yes. For suspended ceilings, clip-hooks are used that catch on the profile of the frame. Installation takes seconds, leaves no marks and holds up to 0.5 kg.

How is hanging advertising better than shelf advertising?

A hanging piece is visible from 10-20 meters and works for navigation to a category, whereas a wobbler or shelf talker is noticed only up close to the shelf. They are used together: the hanging piece brings the shopper in, and shelf advertising holds them at the product.
