A snap frame changes a poster in 30 seconds without tools: the four sides of the aluminum profile flip open on spring-loaded clips, and the poster is held down by a clear anti-glare PET sheet. Shops, cafes and business centers choose them over glued-on posters and expensive lightboxes precisely for the speed of changing the image. Below: what kinds of poster frames there are, how the 14, 25 and 32 mm profiles differ, and which formats to order for a shop window, a menu stand and outdoor wayfinding.
What a snap frame is and how it is built
A snap frame (also called a click frame) is a frame made of anodised aluminum profile with front loading: all four sides open outwards, so the poster is changed without taking the frame off the wall. The construction consists of four elements: the aluminum profile, the corner (mitred at 45° or rounded), a protective anti-glare PET sheet 0.5-0.8 mm thick and a backing made of PVC or galvanised steel. The PET sheet presses the poster against the backing, so no glass is needed; an A1 frame weighs no more than 1.5-2 kg.
Profiles are classified by the width of the face: the wider it is, the stiffer the structure and the larger the format it holds without sagging. A narrow 14-20 mm profile is used for formats up to A2, a wide 32-45 mm profile for A0 and outdoor structures. Opening is by a spring-loaded clip (click) or by wing-type turn fasteners for the vandal-resistant version.
Formats and inner dimensions
A poster frame is labeled by the format of the poster it takes. The outer size is larger by twice the profile width, and the visible field is 5-10 mm smaller than the format, because the profile covers the edge of the poster. Take this into account in the layout: keep important elements 10 mm in from the edge.
| Format | Poster size, mm | Typical profile | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|---|
| A4 | 210 × 297 | 14-25 mm | Table menus, price tags, entrance signs |
| A3 | 297 × 420 | 20-25 mm | Checkout promotions, notices, office wayfinding |
| A2 | 420 × 594 | 25-32 mm | Shop windows, menu stands, lift advertising |
| A1 | 594 × 841 | 32 mm | Shop windows, shopping centers, entrance areas |
| A0 | 841 × 1189 | 32-45 mm | Facades, lobbies, floor-standing A-frame signs |
Besides the A series, non-standard sizes are ordered: narrow vertical strips for columns, 500 × 500 mm squares for lift lobbies. The aluminum profile is cut to any size, and the minimum cutting increment is 1 mm.
Profile types and frame types
The profile width determines both the rigidity and the appearance. Here is how to choose for your task.
| Frame type | Profile | Feature | Your task |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wall-mounted snap frame | 14-32 mm | Front loading, wall mounting | A permanent location, frequent poster changes |
| Double-sided (suspended) | 25-32 mm | Two pockets, ceiling suspension | Shop windows, corridors, readable from both sides |
| Floor-standing on a stand | 32 mm + base | Weighted base or legs | A-frame sign, shop entrance, wayfinding |
| Illuminated (LED) | 32-45 mm | LED backlight around the perimeter | Shop window, HoReCa, dark lobby |
| Moisture-protected | 32 mm | Silicone seal, IP54 rating | Outdoors, canopy, entrance area |
An illuminated snap frame is essentially a thin lightbox with a replaceable poster: the backlight runs around the perimeter through an edge-lit LED strip and a light guide. If you need a bright display without frequent image changes, compare it with a full lightbox, as covered in our article on lightboxes and types of backlighting. For outdoor placement, take only the moisture-protected version with a seal: an ordinary frame collects condensation and the poster goes wavy within a week.
Profile material and the anti-glare sheet
The profile is made of anodised aluminum: it does not corrode and holds its shape through temperature swings from -30 to +50 °C, which matters for the entrances in Tashkent with its summer heat. The standard color is silver (matt anodising); to order, it can be powder-coated in any RAL color or finished in gold or matt black laminate.
The protective sheet is not glass but transparent PET (polyethylene terephthalate) 0.5-0.8 mm thick with an anti-glare coating. It does not break, weighs three times less than glass and is safe at height and in walkways. PET has a downside: over time it turns cloudy and scratches, so in heavily used frames the sheet is replaced every 1-2 years, which is a very cheap consumable.
Where poster frames are used
A snap frame covers three scenarios in which the poster is changed often. The first is retail and shop windows: promotions, seasonal sales, new collections. The second is HoReCa: menus of the day, special offers, directions to the dining hall. The third is offices and business centers: signs, notices, tenant advertising in lift lobbies.
A poster frame often works together with other media. At the entrance it is complemented by a floor-standing A-frame sign, and inside by a system of wayfinding plaques, and the poster itself is printed in wide format together with the rest of the POS products for retail. This way the entire sales floor is designed in a single style.
Runs, Lead Times and Installation in Tashkent
Ready-made frames in standard formats A4-A1 ship from stock on the day of the order; non-standard sizes and colored profiles take from 1-2 working days for cutting and assembly. Wall mounting is simple: the frame is fixed with 4-6 screws, or with double-sided tape for light formats up to A2. Posters for the frame are printed on heavy paper of 150-200 g/m² or on self-adhesive film. Prepare the file in CMYK at actual size; no bleed is needed, but leave 10 mm around the perimeter to be covered by the profile.
Frequently asked questions about poster frames
How does a snap frame differ from an ordinary photo frame?
On a snap frame all four sides open on spring-loaded clips, so the poster is changed right on the wall in 30 seconds, without taking the frame down and without tools. With an ordinary photo frame, the picture is inserted from the back, after taking the frame off the wall and removing the back cover.
Which profile should I choose for A1?
For A1, take a 32 mm profile: a narrow 25 mm one sags along the long side on an area this size. For A0 and outdoor structures a 32-45 mm profile is needed, and for tabletop A4-A3 14-25 mm is enough.
Can a snap frame be installed outdoors?
Only in the moisture-protected version with a silicone seal and an IP54 protection rating. An ordinary frame outdoors collects condensation under the PET, and the poster buckles within a week. For canopies and entrance areas this is a mandatory requirement.
Is glass needed in a poster frame?
No, a clear anti-glare PET sheet of 0.5-0.8 mm is used instead of glass. It does not break, is three times lighter than glass and is safe in a walkway. When it turns cloudy, it is replaced as a consumable every 1-2 years.
How does an illuminated snap frame differ from a lightbox?
An illuminated frame is a thin box with edge-lit LED backlighting and a replaceable poster loaded from the front. A classic lightbox is deeper, brighter and designed for a permanent image on backlit banner fabric. The frame is chosen when the picture changes often.
What size should the poster for the frame be printed?
Exactly to the frame format (for example, 594 × 841 mm for A1). The profile will cover 5-8 mm on each side, so keep important text and the logo 10 mm in from the edge. No bleed for trimming is needed.
