Checkout Stands and Displays for the Impulse Zone: Types, Sizes, Print Runs

Checkout stand with impulse-buy products at a store checkout

According to POPAI research, up to 76% of purchase decisions are made right on the sales floor, and a significant share of them in the checkout zone, while the shopper waits to pay. Checkout stands turn this minute of waiting into additional sales of small items. Below: what kinds of structures there are, what checkout sizes they are designed for, what they are made of and what print runs to plan for a chain.

What a checkout stand is and why it is needed

A checkout stand is retail equipment or a POS structure placed in the payment zone to display impulse-demand goods: chewing gum, chocolate bars, batteries, lollipops, wet wipes. The average impulse-purchase ticket is small, but with a flow of 300-800 receipts a day, a single checkout adds a noticeable amount of turnover on small items.

Unlike promo stands and floor displays, which are placed in the aisles of the floor, a checkout structure works in the narrow space between checkout booths or right on the conveyor belt. This dictates strict limits on dimensions.

Types of checkout structures

Four formats cover almost all retail tasks. They differ in where they are installed and in service life.

Floor-standing checkout stands

A freestanding structure 900-1300 mm high, placed at the end of a checkout booth. Made of metal (wire basket or panel type), PVC or corrugated board. Multi-level display with 3-5 shelves. Metal ones last 5-8 years; cardboard ones are made for a specific promo flight of 1-3 months.

On-counter displays

Compact structures installed on the checkout counter itself or on the divider between checkouts. Height 200-500 mm. Most often acrylic or PVC: the material can be wiped clean, looks neat and lasts 1-3 years. Suitable for chocolate, chewing gum and small perfumery items.

Checkout dispensers

Narrow hanging or tabletop holders for one or two SKUs: batteries, razors, lighters. Minimal space, maximum visibility for a specific brand. Often ordered by FMCG manufacturers for their own products, with branding in the corporate style.

Cardboard mini-stands for the belt

Light corrugated structures placed on the inactive part of the checkout belt or on a shelf at the checkout. Assembled in 2-3 minutes, offset or digital printing. Run from 300 pieces, service life up to 1 month: a format for seasonal or promotional display.

Standard dimensions for the checkout zone

The dimensions of a checkout structure are determined by the width of the aisle between checkouts and the height of the checkout booth. Below are three typical formats that do not interfere with the cashier's work and pass approval with most chains.

Format Width, mm Height, mm Depth, mm Where installed
On-counter display 200–350 200–500 150–250 On the checkout booth, on the divider
Compact floor-standing 300–400 900–1100 250–350 Narrow end of a checkout, mini-market
Standard floor-standing 400–550 1100–1300 300–400 Supermarket, hypermarket

A width of up to 400 mm is a safe maximum for most checkouts: the structure does not narrow the aisle and does not violate the requirements for evacuation routes, which retail chains pay attention to during approval.

Materials: run size, service life, application

The choice of material sets both the budget and how often the structure will have to be refreshed. The relationship between material, run and service life is easier to compare in a table.

Material Min. run Service life Lead time Typical use
Corrugated board from 300 pcs 1-3 months 3-7 days Promotions, seasonal display, FMCG
PVC from 10 pcs 1-3 years 5-12 days On-counter displays, recurring promotions
Acrylic from 10 pcs 2-4 years 7-14 days Perfumery, premium brands
Metal (wire/panel) from 50 pcs 5-8 years 10-25 days Basic equipment of a chain's checkout zone

To choose between cardboard, PVC and acrylic for a specific task, a separate review will help: comparison of POS materials by task, run and budget.

What to consider when ordering for a chain

A checkout structure almost always goes through approval by the retailer. Chains have requirements for height, material (in food retail, cardboard next to open food is restricted), method of fixing and the brand book. Before launching a run, it is worth requesting the planogram of the checkout zone of the specific chain.

The second point is logistics. Cardboard mini stands are shipped flat and assembled on site by a merchandiser, which lowers delivery costs across the regions of Uzbekistan. Metal and acrylic units are shipped assembled or semi-assembled. That costs more, but the structure lasts for years.

Format comparison by task

A quick selection matrix: which format to choose for a specific goal.

Your task Format Material
Seasonal promotion for 1 month Cardboard mini stand Corrugated board
Permanent chocolate display On-counter display Acrylic / PVC
Promoting a single brand SKU Dispenser PVC / metal
Standard checkout-area equipment for a retail chain Floor stand Metal

Frequently asked questions about checkout stands

What is the minimum order quantity for checkout stands?

Cardboard mini stands start from 300 pcs, PVC and acrylic countertop displays from 10 pcs, and metal ones from 50 pcs. The more complex the structure and tooling, the higher the threshold for a cost-effective run.

What height is best for a checkout stand?

For floor-standing units, 900-1300 mm: the product sits in the shopper's line of sight at hand level and does not block the cashier's view. Countertop displays are made 200-500 mm tall so they do not get in the way of work at the till.

Does a checkout stand need to be approved by the retail chain?

Yes, almost always. Chains regulate the dimensions, material and mounting in the checkout area. Request the planogram and the specific retailer's requirements before launching the run, so the unit is not removed from the store.

What material should a chocolate checkout display be made of?

For a permanent display, acrylic or PVC: they can be washed, are not affected by moisture from melting products and last 1-4 years. For a short promotion, branded corrugated cardboard from 300 pcs is a good fit.

How many days does it take to make checkout stands in Tashkent?

Cardboard takes 3-7 days, PVC and acrylic 5-14 days, and metal stands 10-25 days, depending on the run size and the complexity of the tooling. Urgent cardboard runs can be done faster with prepayment.

Can a brand logo be applied to a checkout stand?

Yes. On cardboard and PVC, full-color printing from your artwork; on acrylic, printing or applique; on metal, printing on the powder coating or interchangeable branded panels. Artwork is accepted with text converted to outlines, in line with the brand book.
